$550,000 settlement – patient in nursing home abused

Because nursing homes treat the most vulnerable, there are minimum standards to protect their residents.  Nursing homes and assisted living facilities must comply with state and federal requirements.  These include minimum nursing home staffing and care standards.

Why don’t all nursing homes comply with minimum standards?  Because it costs money.  And nursing homes and assisted living facilities want to maximize their profits.  For every staff member they employ, they make less.  So if they can reduce staffing they make more money, even if it reduces the care to residents.

An elderly resident of a Monroe County nursing home was mistreated, abused and neglected for a period of several months.  The care by the staff fell below state and federal guidelines.  John Elliott Leighton represented the resident and obtained a $550,000 confidential settlement.
