Leighton Law is a personal injury and wrongful death firm dedicated to representing families of those who have been killed…
John Elliott Leighton was retained to represent the parents of a young woman who was killed in a horrible boating crash on Lake Irma in Orlando. The woman was on a boat being driven by a man whose blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, and he was operating it in a lake without using lights. He crashed the boat into a dock at full speed, killing this 20 year-old woman and seriously injuring several others. Mr. Leighton obtained a $1,325,000 recovery for the parents this young girl, which was more than the available insurance coverage.
Drunk boating is the leading contributing factor in boating deaths. The driver was charged with BUI (boating under the influence) and after several years was found guilty and sentenced to 6 years in state prison. His story is documented in a brief public service video.
