Confidential Settlement — Sexual Assault of teen by restaurant manager

Most parents encourage their teenage children to develop responsibility and get a job to earn some money.  One such family retained John Leighton, after their  14 year old son was sexually assaulted.  The boy worked at a pizza parlor.  As part of his job, he would be taken to apartment complexes to hang promotional coupons on apartment doors.

After work one day, the manager of the restaurant took the boy back to his apartment and sexually assaulted him.  Mr. Leighton proved through litigation that the restaurant failed to conduct an appropriate background check of the manager. A reasonable investigation would have shown that he had been in prison for a prior sex crime in another state.  Mr. Leighton obtained a confidential settlement for this young man.

This is an example of negligent hiring, negligent retention and negligent supervision.
