Bariatric surgery for weight loss has become very popular in the United States. While it is one way to help someone who is morbidly obese, it comes with serious risks of death. In the hands of a doctor or nursing staff that does not quickly recognize a complication, it is deadly. Because of their complexity, weight loss surgery often involves known complications.
Leighton Panoff Law’s John Leighton has litigated many bariatric weight loss surgery cases. Sadly, most of them have involved the death of the patient. But gastric bypass patients deserve the very best care; with a known morbidity rate of 1% the medical industry is aware that these patients require the highest level of monitoring. Because bariatric surgery is a cash cow for many hospitals and providers, a great number of patients are being considered candidates for this risky surgery.
A 40-year-old woman without a surviving family died following bariatric gastric bypass surgery for weight loss. Like many weight loss surgeries, this one resulted in complications such as bleeding which was not recognized promptly. Once she began internally bleeding, the nursing staff and doctor did not act soon enough. John Elliott Leighton negotiated a $700,000 confidential settlement for her estate based on medical malpractice.
