$400,000 settlement – woman attacked in office building (Orange County, FL)

A 33 year-old woman was working in an office building when she was attacked by a homeless man at night.  She was working in her office and went to the elevator, where she was confronted by this man. He tried to rape her and she fought back.  The life-and-death battle lasted several minutes, after which the man went running off.

The woman sustained psychological injuries. John Elliott Leighton was retained to represent the Orlando woman.  Mr. Leighton proved that the building management knew that the man was staying in the building and had actually been given access.  He also proved that they knew he was homeless.  A confidential $400,000 settlement was obtained on her behalf prior to trial against the management company and others who were responsible for security and access.

Leighton Law aggressively represents people who have been harmed by criminal acts like assault, sexual abuse and rape.  We are committed to reducing crime and improving security at commercial premises like office buildings. Our partners are both leaders in the national bar organizations representing victims of crime and survivors of sexual abuse.  Mr. Leighton is the author of the leading textbook in the field, Litigating Premises Security Cases, and is the past President of the National Crime Victim Bar Association.  He is the Chairman of the Inadequate Security Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice.
