$1,000,000 Settlement – Teenager Mistaken for Burglar, Killed by Police (Federal Rights Case)

John Elliott Leighton recovered $1,000,000 and policy changes against a police department following the death of a college student.  The young man was shot and killed by a police officer who mistakenly thought he was a burglar.  The police department violated some of its own procedures, and as part of the settlement agreed to create new policies and training procedures for officers to prevent this type of tragedy. Mr. Leighton filed a federal civil rights case on behalf of the parents of this fine young man. Estate of A.B. v City of X.
