When you have a case to refer to a Florida personal injury specialist…do your homework:

• Call your lawyer friends and colleagues. Check for professional discipline through the state’s Supreme Court attorney registration or bar association.  In Florida you can check out lawyers at the Florida Bar web site.  Ask the prospective co-counsel for attorney references and call those people.

• Verify malpractice coverage, as the referring lawyer can be held responsible for malpractice in a co-counsel relationship.

• Find out if the lawyer you are considering referring to or co-counseling with has handled, litigated and tried cases like this.

• Find out whether the lawyers are board certified and considered pre-eminent in their field.

CHOOSE CAREFULLY…

When considering which lawyer to refer your case or co-counsel with, there are a number of things to consider before you make your decision:

• Is the lawyer board certified in civil trial law (the highest level of professional achievement available)?

  • Most lawyers who claim to be personal injury attorneys are not board certified.

• Is the lawyer considered preeminent in his or her field?

• Has he or she written extensively, lectured, taught or been recognized as being at the top of the field in trial law?

• Does the lawyer regularly litigate and try cases of the type you have? If so, find out what kind of results that lawyer has had in court.

• Is the attorney listed in The Best Lawyers in America?

• Has he or she been selected for inclusion in Florida SuperLawyers, Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite,” Orlando Style magazine’s “Orlando Legal Elite,” and “Top Lawyers” in the South Florida Legal Guide?

• Does the lawyer hold an “A-V”  preeminent rating (highest possible rating for ability and ethics) by Martindale-Hubbell?

• Does the lawyer have a 10.0 rating by AVVO.com?

• Has the lawyer held leadership positions in professional organizations in his or her specialty?
